“South Africans should be grateful that we (the Guptas) decided to have the wedding in your country, it will boost tourism.”

Ah, the entitled. Nobody likes it.

The research station of the South African National Antarctic Expedition, completed in 1997, is the oldest of this new generation. But what it lacks in technology it makes up for in location. The base rests dramatically on top of an outcropping, known as a nunatak, some 800 feet high. The void below acts as a subzero maelstrom, sucking in snow and keeping it from burying the station up above. Furthermore, Sanae’s position about 100 miles inland, off the ice, and situated on solid rock makes it ideal for sensitive seismological studies and GPS research. Teams of up to 10 scientists, engineers, mechanics, and doctors do 15-month stints perched here. Call it a lab with a view.

Elephant Safari at Camp Jabulani
“…herd of trained African elephants which were rescued by the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre. Visitors can experience the extraordinary impact of interacting personally with the mammoth animals on daily elephant rides (the only night safari in the world!), around the waterhole as they swim and play, and in the wild habitat surrounding their stables.”

Praying for no rain: A woman walking her dog while I was photographing this church in Louis Trichardt stopped to tell me that the roof leaked terribly. This was quite interesting to me. I suppose she thought I was an insurance man. God bless her.

Beach Art dedicated to Robert Mugabe, Nature’s Valley, by Obie Oberholzer from Round the Bend
I have had such an enjoyable time catching up with Obie’s wondrous and fantastical journeys through Africa portrayed in “Round the Bend”. The images (magnificent as they are) are only half the story - it’s the captions distilling the story behind them that are like shots of concentrated mampoer - a riotous tonic after a long difficult drive through the bush.
Go now and get the book. You’re welcome.
