This splendid picture of the anchorage off Durban was taken in 1942 and clearly shows the huge amount of shipping which the port handled during the war. The patrolling aircraft on the lookout for hostile forces is a Fleet Air Arm Walrus amphibian based at Stamford Hill Aerodrome in the city.

In 1945, 18-year-old Princess Elizabeth convinced her father that she should be allowed to contribute directly to the war effort. She joined the Women’s Auxiliary Territorial Service, where she was known as No 230873 Second Subaltern Elizabeth Windsor, trained as a driver, and drove a military truck while she served. This training was the first time she had been taught together with other students. It is said that she greatly enjoyed this and that this experience led her to send her own children to school rather than have them educated at home. She was the first, and so far only, female member of the royal family to actually serve in the armed forces, although every monarch is nominally the Commander-in-Chief of both the British and Canadian Armed Forces, and other royal women have been given honorary ranks. During the VE Day celebrations in London, she and her sister, Princess Margaret, mingled with the crowd after midnight to celebrate with everyone.

“You know what you can do with this.”
-Myrna Loy to her movie studio when they sent her a letter reprimanding her for speaking out on behalf of German Jews. Her activism resulted in a loss of revenue for the studio when Hitler banned Loy’s movies in Germany.

I just thought that I couldn’t love her more.

There  recently was a death of a 98 year-old woman named  Irena Sendler. During WWII, Irena got permission to  work in the Warsaw Ghetto as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist. She had an  ’ulterior motive’ …. She knew what the Nazi’s  plans were for the Jews (being German.). Irena  smuggled infants out in the bottom of the tool  box she carried and she carried in the back of  her truck a burlap sack, (for larger kids..) She  also had a dog in the back that she trained to  bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in and out  of the ghetto. The soldiers of course wanted  nothing to do with the dog and the barking  covered the kids/infants noises.. During her  time of doing this, she managed to smuggle out  and save 2500 kids/infants. She was caught, and  the Nazi’s broke both her legs, arms and beat  her severely. Irena kept a record of the names  of all the kids she smuggled out and kept them  in a glass jar, buried under a tree in her back  yard. After the war, she tried to locate any  parents that may have survived it and reunited  the family. Most had been gassed. Those kids she  helped got placed into foster family homes or  adopted.Last  year Irena was up for the Nobel Peace Prize …  She was not  selected.Al  Gore won, for a slide show on Global  Warming.
An email I received from me Aunty this morning… Mainly posted for my loathing of Algore.
