The Ponte Tower in Johannesburg, by Manfred Hermer. Built in 1975 under apartheid, white people lived in the apartments facing outside, while their black servants inhabited the apartments facing the inner tube.

I didnt know this about the Ponte. Wow. Talk about the architecture of Apartheid…

complete horseshit - The inner ring is where the corridors and elevators are situated! I don’t know where people get this hooha from. I’ve been there.
What actually happened was that the wealthy inhabitants who employed cleaning staff used to throw them down the inner tube to a great big apartheid death pit below to appease the gods. This only happened once every two years when the moon was waning just after the winter solstice.
There were rumours that the tower was built to house a rocket built in secret during the apartheid years for the South African Space Agency, but this was never confirmed.

toegang verbode One thing I miss about the USA is the absence (relatively speaking) of high walls and security fences which in this town, surround every home and business. Johannesburg is a veritable fortress city where every man’s home is literally his castle. It adds an air of mystery and oppressiveness to this place called the “City of Gold”. I bet that if every wall were put together end to end, it would surpass the great wall of China. Joburg: It is what it is, not what it should be.

This camera saved my father’s life today: two men, one wielding a gun, tried to rob us while taking photographs at sunset in Johannesburg. They shot at my dad. He is fine, thank God. See the blood and the hole in the body? The bullet is lodged inside. Currently completing the paper work at Jeppe Police Station. Bastards took my Camera, most expensive lens, tripod and my desire to live here anymore.
