Aliyu Mustapha-Lamido of Adamawa (Nigeria)
© Daniel Laine
Daniel Laine spent a period between 1988-1991 photographing African Kings and Leaders which resulted in a book, unfortunately now out of print. However the images are well worth a look;click the link below for more from this project.
“One day, Adama who was also called Modibo, heard that a great Marabout (moslem leader) by the name of Ousman Dan Fodio, had proclaimed the Jihad (holy war) in Gobir and the Hausa country. At Adama’s death, his immense territory became Adamawa, which actually covers a part of south-west Nigeria and all of northern Cameroun. Today the Lamido has sixty children, and is the chancellor of Amadou Bello University at Zaria, one of the most prestigious universities in Africa.”

I watched a piece on Al Jazeera featuring George Osadi who very recently took similar portraits of Nigerian Monarchs - I thought it was a stunning concept - and then I found out that Daniel Laine was there way before. Anyway - ‘me-tooism’ aside, they are wonderful to look at, and his work relating to the disaster that is the Niger Delta is absolutely stunning. Check him out.
Amanita muscaria - I picked these outside yesterday, set them up and shot them this afternoon using natural window light.
